Roll Cage Fabrication

Metal Fabrication Questions

Thank you for your interest in our products.     You will get some really nice (wrinkle free) bends in 1-1/2 x .120 wall with either the 6.5 or 5.5 radius dies.

While hydraulics are nice, they are not necessary with the Model 3 bender. The Model 3 tube bender was designed to be a manual bender, easy to use without hydraulics.   The hydraulic kit ($943) can be added in the future if desired.

Currently benders are taking about 2 weeks to deliver.  All orders are shipped direct from the manufacturers in Florida.   If you would like a complete price / shipping quote, let us know.  We would be more than happy to help.

If you are within the continental United States, you can also calculate shipping online at: http://www.medfordtools.com/mb3pricing.html

As for a reference,  there are latterly thousands of satisfied users of the Model 3 all over the world.  I'd say the majority of users are doing the same sort or application as you  (roll cage fabrication).   We started a customers project page.  You can view the work of two
customers who sent us project pictures.

Subject: Model 3 Bender Questions

I am building an off-road buggy and need to bend 1-1/2 x 0.120 4130N (Chromolly) tube.  Will the Model 3 bend this tube without crinkling the inside radius?   I'll probably be using around a 6.5 inch radius die. If I purchase the Model 3 without the hydraulic upgrade can it be added later if needed?

Do you have a reference for someone else that might be using it for a similar application.

Thank you

Ross

Hi Anthony,

Thank you for your interest in our ironworkers.

Both models (4000 and 4500) are great machines.  The 4500 ironworker does have a few extra features such as:

 * 45ton Capacity (which means more punching/cutting power in wider material  (6" x 3/8"  or  8" x 1/4")
* Footswitch for operating the machine (see picture below)
* Punch Station located on the outside (which allows for greater maneuverability when working with long material)
* Capability of accommodating a 12" brake

You can find more info/ spec at http://www.medfordtools.com/metalproironworkers.html

Shipping is currently free to commercial delivery locations within the continental United States.  You will need a forklift for unloading the pallet.

Please let me know if there is anything else I could do for you. Thanks and
have a great day!

I was interested in the 4000 and 4500 unit ironworkers. I am in NJ and would appreciate more detailed information on both units such that justifies the 85% increase in price for a 12% increase in capacity. After itís explained it may be a bargain!  Is the shipping still free to business locations?

Hi Paul,

I would suggest the Evolution 9" metal saw.  The 7" saw would work for you, but you would be better off going with the larger saw because of it's increase in power and cutting capacity.  The 9" saw has an optimum cutting thickness of 1/2", which will easily handle the material you are working with.

You will find that the Evolution metal cutting saw,  will cut faster  and smoother than the sawzall you are currently using. We keep these saws and blades in stock and usually are able to ship your order within a day.

You can find more information about the Evolution metal saws at:  http://www.medfordtools.com/evolution/index.html

I hope this has answered your questions.

Subject: Suggestions on which saw to cut metal

I saw your selection of Evolution metal cutting saws and was wondering which saw would you suggest.  Right now I'm using a sawzall to cut through 3/8" steel.  How readily available are these saws and blades? Will they work on other material such as aluminum?

Subject: Extraction Saw Article Evolution Saw

Saw this post on a firehouse forum I frequent.  Thought you guys might find it interesting.

" couple of weeks ago, our department had a School Bus Rescue drill. A member brought a new toy, a metal cutting saw that looks like a skill saw. I was a little sceptical of it. However, it tore the bus up quicker than any thing I have ever seen, including a spark producing K12 saw. The saw produced no sparks from the carbide metal cutting blade.

We did a 3 side panel cut to remove a 8 foot section of the bus in less than 3 minutes! Chisels and reciprocating saws could not come close.

Now I know that the metal was nice and flat and undamaged, but even to cut through posts and roofs, this thing may just change the way we look at opening up a bus or other large vehicle.

The depth of cut was 2.5" and made it through all parts of the panels including the rub rails."

More of the form can be found at: http://forums.firehouse.com/showthread.php?t=64093

Subject: Roll Cage Fabrication question

I am planning on bending my own rollcage but am wondering if I fab my front down tubes to go through the front part of the floor and weld the tube to the front subframe then to the main hoop and weld my rear downtubes to a similar area in the rear would I need to put subframe connectors in too? I plan on using proper mounting plates and slugging the tubes that go through the floor Any reply is greatly appreciated Thanks

Hi Travis,

Sub frame connectors would be a must with a cage. While you may think that since you are connecting the frame anyway with the cage the SFC are not needed, that is hardly the case. SFC should be the first install then the cage. Be sure anywhere that you land a cage point on that you have a good piece of plate to lane it onto. The NHRA rule book is a great wealth of information about putting in a roll cage, and what should be done.

If you just putting the roll cage in for show it is not as important but it is important to think that if you sell you car to someone else they may not know that it is a show cage and not for function.
